Must-read book for landscape painters

This is a must-read book for anyone who wants to be serious about landscape painting.
Unlike the typical modern instructional painting book which has lots of full-color reproductions of the author's paintings but very little actual copy, This book is mostly words, with a few black-and white pictures. I think it demonstrates the difference between modern times when people want bling but are lazy, compared to the past when a book like this was written in a more intellectual manner and it was expected that the reader would put in some effort.
This is not a book for someone who never painted before. Some of the materials advice is outdated, and it would be a good idea to be familar with modern oil painting supplies before being able to benefit from the advice in this book. Beginners should read this book, just not absolute beginners who have never even painted anything yet.
This is also not a book that will teach you any tricks. And in fact, I can't even promise you that it will help you paint better at all. But if you are serious about putting in the time to become a better landscape painter, there's nothing else like this book, so you need to read this book if for only the reason that all other fine art landscape painters who are selling their works in galleries have probably read it.

I now know why it is a painting standard!

The watercolor artist Eric Weigardt recommended this at a recent workshop so I bought it. I now know why it is considered a classic. The explanations are very clear and timeless which is why this has remained such a standard book for outdoor painters for so long.
