Restlet in Action: Developing RESTful web APIs in Java, by Jerome Louvel, Thierry Templier, Thierry Boileau

Summary

Restlet in Action gets you started with the Restlet Framework and the REST architecture style. You'll create and deploy applications in record time while learning to use popular RESTful Web APIs effectively. This book looks at the many aspects of web development, on both the server and client side, along with cloud computing, mobile Android devices, and Semantic Web applications.

About the Technology

In a RESTful architecture any component can act, if needed, as both client and server—this is flexible and powerful, but tricky to implement. The Restlet project is a reference implementation with a Java-based API and everything you need to build servers and web clients that integrate with most web and enterprise technologies.

About the Book

Restlet in Action introduces the Restlet Framework and RESTful web APIs. You'll see how to easily create and deploy your own web API while learning to consume other web APIs effectively. You'll learn about designing, securing, versioning, documentation, optimizing, and more on both the server and client side, as well as about cloud computing, mobile Android devices, and Semantic Web applications.

The book requires a basic knowledge of Java and the web, but no prior exposure to REST or Restlet.

Purchase of the print book comes with an offer of a free PDF, ePub, and Kindle eBook from Manning. Also available is all code from the book.

A must read for every web developer
    By Dan
The book explains comprehensively in clear and understandable language how to use the Restlet framework. In itself, this would merit a 5 star rating because the framework is extensive and powerful, optionally using many other open source libraries. For example, the framework provides the abiity for HTTP content-negotiation and the easy conversion between content types such as JSON and XML as well as the ability to use POJOs.

However, the authors also explain the REST pattern as an alternative way of designing web services. One feature of Restlet is the ease with which it can be configured as a web server. But it is much more lightweight than traditional web servers such as Websphere Application Server. The Restlet server conforms to the HTTP protocol, but not the JEE protocol, although the client side of Restlet can be used with JEE servers.

After reading this book, you also will be convinced that the JEE protocol has the whole idea of web server backwards. Instead of maintaing conversational state on the server ( in HTTPSession ), for example, any necessary state should be maintained on the client. HTTP was designed to be stateless for good reason.

It is one of the few books on technology that is likely to endure for the long term.

    Poor editing and testing
    By Thomas M. Bracuti
I had high hopes for this book as I needed a crash course in REST style services implemented in Java.
I first ordered and used the MEAP (early release) version of the book and was frustrated by all of the errors in the book, particularly in cross-references.

Later, I bought the actual published book and was very surprised to see many of the same cross-reference errors made it into print.

Also, the very important Converter Service is not covered well at all. The few mentions of it you can find all come with a "we cover that in section X" type of blurb. Unfortunately, they don't actually cover it at all in any of the referenced sections. In fact, they don't cover it in detail in ANY section.

I've also noticed that the sample code does not work as is with the current versions of the library. I had to go back to 2.0.11 to get them working!

    Very frustrating.

If you want to understand why REST is necessary, start here.
    By Graham Davies
This collection is a prime method for getting up to speed on REST and associated technologies. All too often, we forget the plumbing under the floor to our detriment. This book lifts a few floorboards and shows us why we need to know about REST and the rest. As more applications require database support and the capacity to work across multiple platforms, this knowledge is a requirement for success.
