In this newest addition to the Unsung Americans series, Yates draws on a variety of sources to examine the life of Woody Guthrie (1912-1967), perhaps best known today for writing "This Land Is Your Land" and for inspiring a generation of musicians including Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. While much of the book is devoted to Guthrie's role as a champion of the oppressed and underprivileged, the picture that ultimately emerges is of a troubled and immature dreamer who, in his quest for self-fulfillment, avoided his responsibilities to his family (three wives left him) and his employers. Emphasizing her subject's sensitivity to the political and social issues of his times, Yates discusses the changing climate of the country, explaining how these changes are reflected in Guthrie's music. Especially useful are her overviews of the growth of labor movements and the backlash against Communist organizers, the creation of social programs to counteract the Depression, and the effects of WWII on American society. Grade 6 Up?American history is vividly and candidly portrayed in this biography of one of our country's foremost balladeers. Woody Guthrie's story is at once a tale of personal tragedy, survival, and the turmoil created by poverty and natural disaster. Much of his life was played out against the devastating effect of his sister's death when he was six, poverty bred of the dust storms of 1935, and the Great Depression. The hardships faced as his family left Oklahoma for California where they became migrant farm workers is reminiscent of John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. These experiences shaped Guthrie's social conscience and political outlook. Throughout his life, music was a constant, however, and the songwriter used the sounds around him and his concerns for the downtrodden as inspiration. In addition to being a wonderful historical account of American folk music and the times in which the subject lived, this book is also an absorbing read. A crisp style brings to life Guthrie's constant struggle against poverty and social injustice and his final fight against Huntington's chorea, a genetically linked disease. Gr. 6-10. From the age of six, when his older sister burned to death, Woody Guthrie experienced hardship. His mother's battle with Huntington's chorea, from which Woody also died, tore his family apart. When his father was seriously burned, and both parents were hospitalized, Woody was on his own at age 15. His fascination with the songs and stories of the migrant workers he often encountered helped his innate musical and writing gifts blossom. In spite of a personal life marked by marital strife, personal instability, and the tragic death of his four-year-old daughter (ironically, by fire), he wrote more than 1,000 songs and, like his close friend Huddie Ledbetter (better known as "Leadbelly"), popularized and preserved the traditional music of his forebears. Yates describes Woody's creative life and provides important historical information, including a harrowing description of the great dust storm of 1935 and its aftermath. Woody's friendly relationships with labor union organizers and members of the Communist Party, as well as his relationships with other musicians--Leadbelly, Pete Seeger, and Bob Dylan among them--add significant interest to this well-written biography. My 5 year old LOVES to have me read him this book. We homeschool. My son can tell you all about black holes & tons of other things. He now says that he wants to be a scientist when he's an adult, so he can learn all about the planets & such. :)

Kid Tested and Approved

I bought this for my sweet daughter, who is 10, and has been disappointed that so much science time has been getting cut from her class time at her school lately. She says she loves the range of topics this book covers, and that the text appears in a lot of bubble boxes rather then paragraphs. She's willing to read paragraphs, but she is at a stage where she finds it more engaging to have the text broken up some. She also says she really likes the way the pages are laid out with the background colors, and she really likes that some of the pages are different colors. So basically, she loves the visual layout and finds it more interesting to look at for that reason. There also haven't been any issues with the binding, and this is her favorite of the things I've given her in the past couple of months, and has declared it to be quite awesome.

My 7 year old loves this book, he's always telling people the facts he memorizes. it must be well written because he doesn't yawn the entire time he's reading like he does with some other books.

Christopher is an authority on programming calculators from Texas Instruments. He writes for the beginners and for the advanced users. I've gotten a lot of interesting and useful knowledge about these wonderful equipment. And also I took ideas for programming the other great family of Texas Instruments, 89s, 92 Plus and Voyage 200.
I really appreciate this purchase because the content is very useful to me and because I got two books for the same price, the printed one and the electronic one. Yes, if you buy the printed book, you get a code to download the ebook from the publisher, for use it permanently.

Their message, It Gets Better, turned into a popular movement, inspiring thousands of user-created videos on the Internet. Savage's project targeted people of all races, backgrounds and colors, but Boykin has created something special "for colored boys." The new book, For Colored Boys, addresses longstanding issues of sexual abuse, suicide, HIV/AIDS, racism, and homophobia in the African American and Latino communities, and more specifically among young gay men of color. Keith Boykin is a popular TV commentator, inspirational speaker, and New York Times best-selling author. Keith has provided political commentary for CNN, MSNBC, and CNBC, and he previously co-hosted the weekly TV series "My Two Cents" on BET Networks.

Something For Everyone

There are young gay men of color out there dealing with loneliness, isolation, fear, self-esteem, family, suicidal thoughts, coming out, seeking love, identity, health, spirituality, etc. If you fall into any of those categories, this book is for you. I am one of the many colored boys who dealt with all of the things that this book addresses. I must note that this book isn't only for boys. Everyone will take away insight into the experiences of gay men of color, food for thought, and powerful life lessons from reading this book. There is something in it for everyone.

"For Colored Boys" is a collection of essays from various authors about their life experiences. These authors deserve to be commended for the extraordinary courage with which they share their deeply personal stories. Keith Boykin has not left any rock unturned. You will read about how one colored boy ended up homeless going through garbage for food. You will read about how another colored boy was raped by a stranger through seeking love in the wrong place. You will read about how another colored boy who is a preacher's kid reconciled his faith and sexuality. The miraculous and promising thing about every story that you will read is the fact that these authors survived their circumstances to tell their story. I assure you that you will draw encouragement and strength from at least one story. I know I did.

My favorites are "Chicago" by Phill Branch, "No Asians, Blacks, Fats, or Femmes" by Indie Harper and "Religious Zombies" by Clay Cane. Little did I know when I received my copy of this book that its pages would end up highlighted all over like my Bible. I see myself revisiting and turning to this book when I need a reminder that I'm not alone and when I need inspiration. Much thanks to Boykin and all those who contributed to the book. There is no doubt in my mind that you all have saved at least one life with your work.

A Book That Will Wake You Up

If you know little or nothing of the African American gay experience this is the best book I can imagine to start with. I not only learned from this book, but it also opened up in me a compassion for black gays who suffer far more agony than their white counterparts for just trying to be who they are. Although we need more good literature on this poignant topic this book is a great begining.

Very moving book-- reccomend for decent straight, white folk

If you have an interest in the subject matter read this book. If you have no interest in the subject matter read this book -- you will learn about other people and get a little insight into what shapes their lives. Knowing or reading about people different from you will give you a lot of understanding. This understanding my prevent you from being the person at the office saying a bunch of really stupid stuff, thinking you are funny when you are really being very offensive. Don't get me wrong--I love work-place humor and bigots will be bigots-- I'm talking about the people that do not realize they are being offensive and would be horrified to know they are. OK this review got way off -subject. Or did it?

I love Noah and Phoebe's story. They meet in such a fun way, and their chemistry is off the charts. These two are the type of characters that you can easily picture as real people in your acquaintance, and their HEA is heartwarming!
