This book comprises a revised version of the late author's 1967 William James Lectures, published for the first time; reprints of 12 papers, some slightly revised; and a 1987 retrospective commentary on three aspects of the papers. The lectures are a detailed examination of assertion, implication, and meaning; and the papers discuss ordinary language philosophy, meaning, conversational implicature, the philosophy of perception, and metaphysics. In the lectures, Grice emphasizes that language serves many important functions besides scientific inquiry, distinguishes different sorts of meaning, and theorizes about the kinds of implication that our utterances exemplify in ordinary conversation. The papers analyze numerous topics, including different kinds of meaning. Grice's writing is pellucidly clear, his analyses subtle, and his arguments detailed and rigorous. Grice as father of a field of linguistic philosophy

Studies in the Way of Words, by Paul Grice, is a collection of papers by the late British philosopher of linguistics. His concepts such as the Maxims of Conversation and the basic ideas behind presupposition and implicature are vital to a robust understanding of communication through language.
As a philosophical text, Grice's work is a bit difficult to plow through. His prose is quite full of flourishes and there's enough amusing references in there to keep an interested reader going, however the reader must indeed be interested for this book to be of much use. Anyone expecting to fully digest any of the papers in this book would do well to plan on reading it 3 or 4 times. However, if done successfully, the concepts you'll take from it will indeed do much to expand your view of how linguistic communication works.
Rated 5 stars for its philosophical importance and 2 for readability, the 4-star rating given here is a sort of weighted average.

A Fundamental Work

This collection of papers have provided a spine for much work in pragmatics and the philosophy of language ever since they were published. Logic & Conversation, in particular, has helped to shape an entire field. Speaking against ordinary language philosophers such as Wittgenstein, Grice provided a wealth of vital distinctions, most of which have remained unshaken. In addition, and unlike many similar collocations of papers, there is a sense of cohesion to the volume, put in order as it was by Grice himself.

A classic, and requisite reading for anyone interested in the philosophy of language.

Ibby's Feelings is a storybook to be read "with" children who are or may have been exposed to domestic violence. Ibby's Feelings is a cry for help from the young child who is witnessing and/or experiencing domestic violence, and the wounded child who lives within adults who witnessed or experienced domestic violence as children.

Baaqia J. Uqdah (pronounced Bak-ia J. Uk-da) For more than thirty-five years Ms. Uqdah enjoyed caring for infants and toddlers, and teaching preschool children. She combined the skills and knowledge obtained through her work, her credentials in the early childhood profession, and her BA in English to create a literacy rich classroom learning environment for the children she taught and cared for. She later became a childcare center director and progressed to teacher trainer. Ms. Uqdah witnessed domestic violence as a young child, and survived domestic violence as an adult. Upon retiring as an early childhood educator, Ms. Uqdah embarked upon a career as a domestic violence victims advocate. Today she is a candidate for the Domestic Violence Specialist Certification in the State of New Jersey. Her combined passions for early learning and child welfare inspire her primary focus in the field of domestic violence, i.e., its impact it on the very young child.

As an early childhood professional Ms. Uqdah worked with children and families in crisis. Often times the crisis was directly related to domestic violence. Ms. Uqdah would encourage her students to express their feelings through language arts. Additionally, she realized that so often adults learn valuable lessons and gain pertinent information through literature that is intended for children. Thus Ibby was created to assist adults in seeing domestic violence through the eyes of a young child, to help child victims label and voice their feelings, and assist child victims in releasing the fear and sadness they hold within.

With this book, to say "I loved it" does not seem appropriate. This book is necessary. If you have been a child or knows of a child, who has witnessed domestic violence, this book is an beneficial tool in recovery.It should be on the shelf of every guidance counselor and therapist's office.
Children need to know that they are not alone, they are not at fault, and that they will be okay.

I plan to have this book in my early childhood center. I think this is a topic that needs to be exposed to children in a safe setting. You may have contact with a child that is dealing with this type of issue. Ibby's Feelings help the child to express their own feelings. Reading is enjoyable, as well as imformative. Great book!!!

About the Author

Francis Rumsey is Consultant Editor and Technical Writer for the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society, and runs his own consultancy company, Logophon Ltd. Until 2009 he was a Professor at the University of Surrey (UK), specialising in audio engineering and psychoacoustics. He is chair of the AES Technical Council, a Fellow of the AES, and a busy organist.

Tim McCormick is a former Deputy Head of sound at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester (UK), has extensive experience in design and manufacture of audio electronics, and has worked at Klark Teknik and with the RSC at Stratford (UK) where he plotted and operated the sound for many shows as well as designing and building audio equipment when the need arose. Also interested in medieval architecture, The Cathedrals, Abbeys and Priories of Wales was published on 2010.

The 2014 edition is an excellent reference for reading up on the art and science of recording as it is practiced today with analog and digital tools. It is well organized, clearly written and illustrated with easy to understand graphics.

Great sound and recording reference

I am doing the home recording for my hobby. I use DAW (Digital Audio Workstatin) and sequecing software to record songs from computer-connectable instruments, so called MIDI devices including synthesizers, keyboards, etc. I did not major the music and never was a musician myself. However, I have always been intrigued by the sound and music. So, I had a natural desire to learn more about sound and recording in depth and met this book.

As the title 'Sound and Recording: Application and Theory" says, this book covers a broad area of anything related to sound and recording. In fact, this book is thick, having 655 pages. It started from the basic knowledge about sound and moved the topics to the equipments like microphones, loud speakers, mixers, and to the recording technologies. I think this book is not intended for the total beginners who have never been introduced of sound and recording, rather for someone like me who has little knowledge or exeperience in regard to the recording. Some of the diagrams, graphs or equipments can overwhelm the beginner in this area. This was not the case for me and this might relate to my background as an engineer.

Some of the topics like digital audio and surround sound were very helpful for me and I learned how the noise reduction system works from this book. The sentences were easy to read and I felt like the book was more like a reference than a read-through-all type of a book. I placed the book next to my recording devices so that I can refer at any time. And I was happy that the book gave many answers to my questions that I have had in my mind while I have been doing my recordings.

Overall, this is a great book in sound and recording. You will learn a lot of theories, applications and techniques behind the tools and equipments that are using now. And the 7th edition is telling you that many upgrades have been made to this book. I am really glad to have this book.

Excellent Reference For The Professional Or Student

Sound and Recording: Applications and Theory is exactly what it sounds like it is – a textbook for live sound and recording engineers. Given that caveat, this is an excellent text for students and an essential reference for professionals. Authors Francis Rumsey and Tim McCormick have impeccable professional and teaching credentials and bring to bear their combined experience and expertise to give readers an in-depth writing on the subject.

As a reference text, the writing is somewhat dry and will often go beyond the depth of the layperson. However, there is enough explanation that most readers with any background in recording or live sound reinforcement will find the point quickly. The diagrams included are appropriate and clear and provide adequate demonstration of the concepts being discussed.

As this is the seventh edition of this reference, there are several new additions from the previous edition. Updates include new information on emerging industry-standard networking, workstations, software and mastering techniques (including an excellent addition regarding mastering for the ubiquitous iTunes formats). Additional information on emerging systems from Dolby and other recognized leaders will prove invaluable for the professional. Basic information is also provided on new audio reinforcement technologies that are quickly being adapted by high-end venues and outlets.

As the synopsis on the dust jacket alludes, there are numerous books that describe “how to work” audio equipment. This book takes the educational tactic of “how it works,” assuming that the reader has had some experience and background with which to approach this subject. Though not written for amateurs, professionals and students will find an excellent addition to their reference library in this edition of Sound and Recording.

A Great Staff Training Manual

This is a great book for all staff members to read and study. Although the title of the book is "The Optician Training Manual", there is a wealth of information contained in the book that can be used to train all staff members, and should not be limited just to your opticians.
I would recommend buying a book for each of your assistants, opticians, and office manager. Insurance billers, back office personnel, and receptionists would benefit by reading the material as well.

Basic training

This is a basic introduction to the field of Opticianry. Since the publish date is August 2009, I expected that more current technology would be addressed, including digital or free form lens processing and newer materials such as Trivex. A "suggested reading list" to further discuss individual topics, i.e. ophthalmic optics, anatomy and physiology, contact lens techniques, etc., would be useful for optical staff just entering the field.

Exactly what I'd hoped for.

I was hesitant about shelling out $50 for a book without even a peek inside, but this turned out to be worth the money. I've been out of the optical field for awhile and wanted a good general review of the basics. This book turned out to be exactly that and a bit more. It is well written and covers most the knowledge an optician needs to be on the floor and working. For some one new to the field or some one needing a good review, this fits the bill.

"This book is about awakening the heart," writes the American Tibetan Buddhist teacher Chodron. "If you have every wondered how to awaken your genuine compassionate heart, this book will serve you as a guide." This is a broad and simple statement, and those unfamiliar with When Things Fall Apart or other titles by Chodron may rightfully fear that a volley of nonsensical fuzzballs is on the way. Good bedtime reading, perhaps, but in the decade since its original 1994 publication, there seems to be even less grounds to claim that all humans are innately capable of openness, clarity and compassion (or "bodhichitta"). What follows, however, is a savvy, down-to-earth contemporary version of an old Tibetan Buddhist technique for mind training, or "lojong," supported by instructions in basic sitting meditation practice (to cultivate tranquility and insight) and "tonglen"—a meditative technique that involves taking in the dark, heavy, negative emotions and sending out an attitude of light, compassionate embrace, a warm spaciousness, in its place. Chodron supplies a pithy contemporary analysis for each of 59 "slogans" that make up the teaching behind this practice. "There is a saying that is the underlying principle of tonglen and slogan practice: ‘Gain and victory to others, loss and defeat to myself,’" she writes. Far from being as masochistic as this may sound to Western ears, however, the aim is get people to unclench the heart and mind, to dare to taste defeat. Although far from easy, Chodron’s humane, incisive approach can help any sincere reader learn to relate to fear and pain and pleasure and joy in a way that will open their hearts to the richness of their own lives and all life.

American Buddhist nun Chodron, who was trained in the Tibetan tradition by the late Chogyam Trungpa, provides a book of meditative insights and instructions based on the 59 Tibetan Buddhist slogans for developing compassion, e.g., "When we find that we are holding back, here is instruction on how to give." While some of the slogans depend on Buddhist teaching, many-such as "be grateful to everyone"-are widely applicable. Chodron's teachings are supported by personal reflections, clear explanations, and an attention to how one may achieve the goal of compassion. Useful both for Buddhist meditators and those wanting to understand Buddhist spirituality, this is recommended for large public and academic libraries.

This book saved my life!

After the death of my most important loved one, I contemplated life and living without him in it...It was a dark path down a frightening road; not even a flicker of light met me on the road ahead. A friend lent me this book and I read it cover to cover in one sitting...and, amazingly I realized that someone understood me and my pain. I bought myself a copy and dragged it with me everywhere I went-it was for me as my blanky had been as a child. I read it over and over until it fell apart. I have since bought at least 6 more copies of this book, intending to keep them. And yet, somehow, I always found myself giving it away to someone I cared about. The day I bought my Kindle Fire, I downloaded it and still always have it with me...and I am not giving this copy away. :) I do however, still find myself buying this book for friends... I now read it when I am feeling content, scared, happy, or sad-it seems to speak to me regardless of my mood. When I say this book saved my life- I mean it. Surviving a loved one's suicide is the most intense grief I have ever, and will ever, experience - but this book kept my pain at bay and my loved ones from experiencing the pain of my not possibly being here. Whenever I felt the darkness creeping in, and the hope disappearing, I reached for this book and in all senses of the word-THIS BOOK SAVED MY LIFE AND TAUGHT ME HOW TO LIVE in a brighter, happier, and purposeful life!

Be calm and let compassion guide your future.

A delightful, thought-provoking book that requires a second, slower and more contemplative read.

My initial thoughts are that this book could be summed appropriately with the philosophy "Don't sweat the small stuff. And don't sweat the big stuff either. In fact, don't sweat at all."

Equally though, it also counsels not to get overly ecstatic or confident when things go your way.

The key seems to be not to let hurdles, obstacles or setbacks get you too down for too long. Equally, to not let successes think you cannot fail. Be calm and mild, either way.

So, wherever you are, at any time, start from there, taking a middle path of not too much fear or sadness as well as not too much confidence and elation. After all, all feelings and situations are temporary.

I'm glad I read it and look forward to having time to read it again slowly and contemplatively.

Needed at any journey of your life

I always love the teachings of Pema as she is always on point with her words and it seems to always be the right words at the right time. This book took me a long time to read because every chapter I wanted to make sure I was digesting and truly taking in everything she was writing and then applying it to my own life.

It took me 4 years to actually read the book when a friend first referred to me, and I'm glad I did. It allows you to realize that you don't have to "wait to start", that you truly can start at any place whether it's pain, or you just feel lost, feel happy and want to be reassured, angry or just numb. I would recommend this for anyone and I will probably read it again to make sure that it "sticks".
