Welcome foolish mortals...

Don't let the age range fool you - I hesitated buying this book because I thought it was simply a children's book to introduce the movie. It has tons of information about the movie - but it is also a MUST HAVE for any Haunted Mansion fan! The drawings and photographs of all of the Haunted Mansions around the world are just fantastic. Plus...have you ever wondered what the ghost hanging in the portrait gallery looks like up close? Well, wonder no more. Jason Surrell does a fantastic job of telling the story of the Haunted Mansion from the original idea all the way up to the soon-to-be released movie. Since Mr. Surrell is a Disney Imagineer himself, he was able to include wonderful photos and artwork from the original Imagineers who worked on the project. I find it hard to believe that anyone would be disappointed with this book...if you're looking for information about the movie, you'll find behind the scenes photos, artwork, and more. If you are interested in art/design, you'll enjoy the drawings, paintings, photographs, and models from the creative minds at Disney! And if you are a Haunted Mansion fan - you will be in absolute heaven!

It's 2003's "From the Magic Kingdom to the Movies"---only without "the Movies", and some updated content

This is basically a reprint of 2003's "The Haunted Mansion: From the Magic Kingdom to the Movies", completely scrubbed of any references to the underwhelming Eddie Murphy film, and with a new chapter on Hong Kong Disneyland's Mystic Manor (informative with lots of illustrations and photos) and a few new spreads on recent additions to the Anaheim and Orlando attractions (the attic bride and hatbox ghost for Disneyland, the new elaborate queue and gift shop at WDW). Even though the film was a letdown, its a shame to completely omit it from this new version--it is part of the attraction's history and produced some interesting design work that is worthy of inclusion. Also, too bad they didn't include a section on Mansion collectibles--a glaring omission from the first edition that they could have corrected here.

That said, this is still the tops book for Haunted Mansion fans and there's enough new material here to warrant a repurchase.

5 Mansions in one book - Inside & Out !!

With 4 Haunted Mansions in existance as rides, and another existing on the silver screen, it's hard to find a book that encompasses all of these, let alone one that goes into such great detail as "The Haunted Mansion: From the Magic Kingdom to the Movies"
I have been a Mansion Fan ever since the opening of the Disneyland one was broadcast on TV. I have been through the two USA Mansions, but living in Australia, have as yet to see the movie.
Jason Surrell has masterfully woven facts, behind-the-scenes tales and even a little fan folklore to come up with this, the definitive Disney Attraction Book.
Previous reviews have mentioned many of the delights contained within, however it's wonderful to see so much of the "Blue Sky" phase and the richly detailed imagineering models, maquettes and artwork from the rides and the movie alike. Yes, it's like being able to X-ray the goose that laid the golden eggs, but you don't have to kill the goose to do it - you come away from this book wanting to go on the rides or see the movie again just to check out more of the minutae.
At 132 pages long, you get plenty of "bang for buck" with this book, and even when you have finished it from cover to cover, it is the sort of book you can happily take up time and time again, to re-read, and to show others.
Mansion Fans - Don't miss this one.
Disney Fans - A valuable addition to any Disney book collection.
Anyone Else - Read this, and you will be longing to visit a Haunted Mansion near you, I guarantee !!

About the Author

James Youell has been working as a research fellow since 2004 at the University of Portsmouth on the design of a high-throughput single-molecule drug development tool utilising molecular motors. Through the development of this system, he has worked alongside a pan European research team, incorporating cutting-edge experimental tools, to build the various biological and synthetic components required. Dr Youell has published a number of papers on the development of such synthetic biology devices and given invited seminars on the subject.

Keith Firman is now retired from the University of Portsmouth, where he was reader in Molecular Biotechnology. He investigated the properties of type I restriction-modification systems. This led to the coordination of three consecutive European grants worth, in total, in excess of €4,500,000 to develop an electronic device for biosensing using single-molecule molecular motors. Dr Firman has published more than 50 papers and was also invited to participate in a number of international road-mapping exercises in nanotechnology.

Good but too brief

Overall Molecular Motors in Bionanotechnology was an interesting read. The writing is clear and engaging; the volume's illustrations are numerous and detailed, though see below. This would be a great book if it were expanded in a later edition. Disappointingly, however, this volume is very short, being just shy of 200 pages, of which only 130 pages are actual text, most of the rest being references. Moreover, there are times when the authors get off track and go into detail about information that, for such a slim volume whose focus is molecular motors, doesn't seem relevant. For example, some 14 pages are spent listing the more than 20 subclasses of myosin, but these proteins are never described as being distinct molecular motors. Similarly, members of the kinesin family are enumerated over several pages without their being described as significantly different motors. The illustrations in the volume are very engaging, though at times the detail is difficult to see. It looks like they may have been shrunk to fit the text's smallish pages. The captions of the illustrations, however, were very disappointing, having little or no information about what is being illustrated. All in all, I wished the authors had provided more of the kinds of information that is fascinating in the volume - more types and variations of molecular motors, more about their mechanisms, about how they are assembled, and how they can be used ... and less extraneous information that I can read elsewhere.

About the Author
Judith Bell's career in education began as a university lecturer, head of department and then vice principal in Further Education. After positions at the Open University as a senior counsellor and course team writer, she became one of Her Majesty's Inspectors of Schools, specializing in continuing education. In 1997, she was awarded both the MBE for services to educational research and the degree of D.Univ by the Open University for services to adult education. Stephen Waters has 35 years' experience in education, as a secondary teacher, head of department, Assistant Head Teacher and a Secondary English Consultant with a local authority. He holds an Advanced Diploma in Educational Management and an MA in Education from the Open University, both of which required him to conduct a range of research case studies. Stephen is currently an associate trainer and social digital coach with the Digital Youth Academy, connecting the "born digital" generation to the business world via apprenticeships in using social media in business.

Black voices finally heard - more than just slaves

At last a book that enlarges what we know about black people in the world of Spanish conquest and Atlantic travel. What is especially notable about this text is how it gives us the story in the voices of the people themselves and the tools to be able to hear them. Too often scholars narrate for the subjects of study or else give us texts which we don't know how to decipher across the barriers of time, dialect, ways of speech. In this volume the focus is always on the voices from the African diaspora. An exciting chance to gain a wider and more nuanced picture of what it meant to be black in Latin America and Spain in the time of 1550-1821. This book is accessible to non-academic readers such as myself.
