Misty E. Vermaat has more than 25 years of experience in the field of computer and information technology. What a joke

DO NOT BUY THE BOOK!!! Just buy the coursemate/cengage study guide. It's much cheaper than the book and it's all you need. The fact they don't include that stuff in the price of a $150-$180 book is insane. What a money grab.

Buy what you need to get an A for less than 10% of this book and don't get robbed like I did.

I have never read a textbook worse than this one. I am currently enrolled in a basic computing course titled "Intro to Business Computing". Its a pre-req for many other courses, and granted its a "basic" course the text book they picked (above) is the worst I have even had to force myself to sit through. It is basic but it goes beyond basic, Its insulting to anyone, that is even if you aren't computer literate...

I don't EVER write reviews, this book is so bad in my opinion, I will go out of my way to 1-star this and hope the editor/publisher goes out of business. misty e. vermaat should be ashamed of putting such nonsense out into the mainstream. I don't know how on earth this book was ever selected to be my courses textbook....

Not really about 2008

if you are looking to learn SQL Server, then this book is for you, but if you are looking to learn SQL Servers new stuff, specifics to 2008, it appears to be "outside the scope of this book."

I suspect this book was originally titled something like Beginners guide to SQL server 2000 and has been updated each time there is a change, but most of the stuff is generic and doesnt' change.

A good book if you are interested in learning SQL Server, but has very little specific to the advances in 2008 that I was looking for, like the Hierachal datatype.

I do not understand some people, when they complain or do not rate the book high, stipulating that it is for beginners. DUH!!! That is exactly what the book is for..., beginners! The book stipulates..., a beginner's guide..., so that is what is should be and it is. I am a recent computer graduate and the best thing about the book is it gives you a great overall foundation to build upon. I had a database class in college and this book covers much, much more. It is not easy, and not too hard. Best thing about it..., it has no mistakes or errors. There are other books that have many errors and errors are the worst and can hang you up or confuse you for hours. So being error free gives it an automatic 5 stars and being true to the title also gives it 5 stars.

So for a beginner book..., it is a 5 star book, and trust me..., it is not easy as pie. It is in depth for an overall great foundation.

About the Author

Alasdair Allan is a Scientist, Author, Hacker and Tinkerer, and co-founder of a startup working on fixing the Internet of Things. He is the author of a number of books, and from time to time he also stands in front of cameras. He is a contributing editor for MAKE magazine, and a contributor to the O'Reilly Radar. A few years ago he caused a privacy scandal by uncovering that your iPhone was recording your location all the time. This caused several class action lawsuits and a U.S. Senate hearing. Several years on, he still isn't sure what to think about that. Alasdair is a former academic. As part of his work he built a distributed peer-to-peer network of telescopes which, acting autonomously, reactively scheduled observations of time-critical events. Notable successes included contributing to the detection of what--at the time--was the most distant object yet discovered.
