He describes the emergence of the improbable leader Lech Walesa, the ensuing tumult that culminated in martial law, and -- for this updated version -- the fate of the Solidarity movement in subsequent years.

Eyewitness Account of the Birth of Solidarity
By SCOTT A TAYLOR
Timothy Ash was sent to Poland in August 1980 to cover a strike by workers in a Gdansk shipyard. He ended up covering a 16 month struggle for national independence which ended when the Polish Army declared a State of War and crushed the Solidarity movement in December 1981. His account is compelling, human and covers not only events in Warsaw, but other Solidarity centres and strikes around Poland. This book is a wonderfully rich introduction to contemporary Poland and the events and attitudes that have shaped Polish thinking since the war. If you are interested in reading about the Polish struggle for independence this is the book for you.

Chronicle of Solidarity movement
By Leszek Strzelecki
This book, as far as I can tell, remains to this day one of the best written and most comprehensive reports on what was happening during the 18 or so months from the creation of Solidarity movement in Poland in August 1980 to the imposition of martial law on December 13, 1981. And the library of books on this subject, as far as English language is concerned, isn't big anyway.

First reason - the author was right where the action was, literally. And, unlike many other foreign correspondents, he did not limit himself to shallow, superficial observations calculated for fast print; he went further. He managed to get in touch with many Solidarity activists, on various levels, and through participation (as an observer) in meetings as well as conversations and interviews succeeded in getting more in depth description of what exactly was happening and explanation why and for what purpose.

Reporting of events, as important as it is in itself, was not the only feature of this book. Timothy Garton Ash also offers quite in depth, even if at times controversial, analysis of events and critical portraits of some key players in the political events - on both sides of the political 'barricade'. The characteristic of Wojciech Jaruzelski, the head of Polish government at the time (both Prime Minister and First Secretary of "PZPR" the Communist Party), particularly stands out as original and convincing.

I myself was actively involved in the Solidarity movement at that time and I can testify to the general accuracy of the statements contained in this book. No particular story, account of an event or critical analysis strikes me as improbable or outright false. Last but not least what also helps the book considerably is its lively, captivating narrative. It is, simply, a good read.

If the aim of the author was to bring Poland, its contemporary history and predicament closer to an English speaking reader, he graciously succeeded. I deem this book an essential reading for anyone who wants to get closer understanding of contemporary Poland and also some understanding of how it was like to live under the Communist rule in those years. Very highly recommended.

Thought-provoking at times
By A customer
This is a good book for those interested in what happened in Poland during the 1980s. I found this book to be thought-provoking at times and the author, Professor Ash tries to maintain an objective outlook. However, there are parts where the book becomes boring (I will not mention where since I do not want to ruin any portion of this book for you). Ash is a great British writer, but he too at times brings his own British-outlook and this creates prejudice and bias. This, however, doesn't take from the book the fact that it is a great window into the Solidarity movement that erupted in Poland as a result of the authoritarian government.

The Astrology of Awakening, by Eric Meyers

This is a time of paradigm shift. We are moving from only identifying in separation consciousness to integrating with our interconnectedness. We are shifting from organizing life around ego in the direction of spiritual realization. Instead of domination, we are learning to live in accordance with nature and each other. Our fundamental approach to life is being reexamined, all of our assumptions and paradigms. How can astrology participate in this giant leap of evolution? The Astrology of Awakening puts forth sensible reforms and adaptations consistent with the collective awakening taking root across the planet.
* Instead of judging the various parts of the astrology system in terms of potential benefit, we can see all facets of the system for their evolutionary value.
* As we are "souls having human experiences" the transpersonal is emphasized. All of the planets are explored in terms of spiritual connection.
* Discussion on the ego -- how it may hinder spiritual realization, but ultimately serve as a vessel for it. We are creating a "sacred marriage" between our autonomy (ego) and Oneness.
* Review of the Patriarchal Value System which has dominated Western consciousness for millennia. How has it influenced astrology, and what can we do about it?
* Discussion of our tendency for viewing life dualistically and how that inhibits Oneness. We can partner the relativistic lower mind (Mercury), with the transpersonal mind (Uranus) and refresh our perceptions. A spiritual paradigm to complement the conventional is offered.
* Central in the new paradigm is how we understand the Sun itself. Instead of looking at it in purely self-oriented ways (personality, ego), our life energy and vitality is our spiritual essence. We are awakening to find that our energy connects us to all of life -- it's not all about "me."
* Integration with the world's wisdom traditions, teachings from awakened masters, and The Perennial Philosophy.
* Thorough discussion of the evolution of consciousness: the various levels in how we approach astrology, and how astrology itself is developing through these levels.
* The Uranus/Pluto square, the astrology of 12/21/12, awakening in culture, Heliocentric Astrology, and much more!

Review
Will astrology be ready to participate in the emerging new paradigm? In The Astrology of Awakening, Eric Meyers invites us from an astrology which orbits around ego towards a truly transpersonal perspective. Our ideas about this ancient art are transformed by a Copernican revolution. With key insights on every page, this is one of the most important books on astrology in decades. --Armand Diaz, Ph.D., author of Integral Astrology

Eric Meyers has presented a convincing case for how the patriarchal value system is still largely reflected in the way we practice astrology. With unflinching clarity, he deconstructs the good/bad designations and gender-based astrological interpretations we've all learned and offers fresh and common-sense ideas to meet our potential for spiritual evolution in the 21st century. Meyers has started an important and sensitive conversation. --Kate Sholly, The Mountain Astrologer magazine

In The Astrology of Awakening, Eric Meyers writes lucidly and cogently about the evolution of consciousness. He is emerging as one of the bright lights in the next generation of true evolutionary astrologers, adding his unique insights and integrative perspectives to the collective conversation. --Steven Forrest, author of The Inner Sky, Yesterday's Sky, etc.

About the Author
Eric Meyers, M.A. is both a counseling astrologer and an author/philosopher, currently living outside Asheville, NC. With a background in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology (Naropa University), his focus is on spiritual growth, emotional healing, the discovery of life purpose, and relationship astrology. Eric has found that astrology clarifies each person's unique path of spiritual awakening. Once we're able to resolve and love the past and work through our karmic patterns, we are more able to be mindful in the present moment. Eric is a graduate of the Steven Forrest Apprenticeship program; an "evolutionary astrologer" with a transpersonal emphasis. He has written 5 astrology books, and has lectured at astrology conferences and groups, book stores, metaphysical fairs and other venues. His deepest desire is to contribute to the renewal of astrology at this pivotal time in human history. Eric is putting forth a new paradigm for astrology, one that literally centers around spiritual realization instead of ego.

Astrological Treasure Trove
By Jessica Murray
Eric Meyers has done something very important here. He has spelled out what astrology's next step needs to be, if it is to keep from calcifying as a field of inquiry: a guide to transpersonal understanding. The Astrology of Awakening draws connections between today's astrology and the universal truths of ancient wisdom paths, exposing the transformational meanings that reside beneath the surface of each of the familiar symbols. Reading it is like walking down the basement stairs of a conventional house, and discovering a treasure trove down there. He shows us an immensely rich dimension that extends way beyond the vocabulary of character traits and personality profiling to which modern astrology has been confined. I suspect that truth-seekers of every stripe- non-astrologers interested in self-search, as well as sky-watchers impatient with the clichs of pop astrology -- will feel they've struck gold. By formally honoring the trans-egoic approach this wonderful book gives us a picture of what astrology could be, in the years ahead: a tool of spiritual growth

Groundbreaking ideas in Astrology
By Dena DeCastro
I have read Eric's other books, and I find him to be a unique voice in the field. Eric addresses some of the primary issues that astrologers ought to concern themselves with today. Primarily, he confronts the limiting ideas of the patriarchal value system that have co-opted astrology in the past, and he lays out a potential course for the evolution of the discipline. As a practicing astrologer for 14 years, I have found frustration in the limited way that astrology is sometimes used. Eric offers the ways in which the transpersonal perspective can bring astrology forward as a tool for evoulution and spiritual awakening, rather than merely as a means toward personal gain. Eric's ideas are fresh and always interesting, and he writes with clarity and wisdom. I recommend this and his other books highly.

The astrology book for our time!
By Amazon Customer
"The Astrology of Awakening" is the astrology book for our time. 2012 is not the end of the world, just the end of an age. Welcome to the future we are awakening to. Life as we know it is rapidly changing in all areas. The old structures and ways of living that we've known for hundreds of years are crumbling, for they no longer serve our highest good as we begin to awaken to the truth of who we really are.

Astrology has always been a marvelous tool to assist in self understanding, but it has the capacity to be so much more than mere fatalistic fortune telling or a psychological descriptive aide. In Eric's capable hands it actually becomes a vehicle for awakening and transformation.

Whether or not you know anything about astrology, if you are on any kind of spiritual path to awakening, this book is for you. Whether you have just a casual interest in astrology, or are a seasoned astrologer, this book is for you. It will open your eyes to an understanding of the process of growth and expanding conciousness we are currently experiencing. Eric skillfully and soulfully shows the correlations of astrological symbols with our evolution of consciousness. It brings many ah-ha moments in recognition of what these challenging times we are facing are really all about.

Eric is a trailblazer and has written a book that guarantees that the ancient art of astrology will continue to have relevance in the 21st century and beyond. I for one can't wait for future volumes. Keep up the good work Eric!

Laymon's legacy...
By G. Van Der Bent
It's been over a year since Richard Laymon's passing and I just remembered what a great writer he was-- 'is' actually, he'll live on through his books!! I decided to pay my long overdue respects in the form of a review.
Let there be no doubt about it 'Savage' is Laymon at his peak!!
I read somewhere that Laymon wrote this book after his editor suggested he tried something different from his usual slasher/ splatterpunk fare. It's breathtaking to read this book and come to the conclusion he's done just that, but also has incorperated almost all of the usual elements that have made him such a winner (in my opinion anyway).
'Savage' is about Jack the Ripper, but it's not like you expect a serialkiller-novel to be. It's a fictional retelling and it also adds so much to the Ripper legend. It's told from the first person point of view and just the mix of Victorian English with Mark Twain-like American slang is worth the price of purchase alone. I won't spoil the plot, I'll just say the book is epic in scope and it heads for one of the most satisfing finales I have ever read. The way the Ripper ends up in the Old West, it's a classic!!
This is for all you knuckleheads out there who still suck their Stephen King books and worshipp their worn off copies of 'Lord of the Rings'. This is so good, maybe they'll call THIS literature in about a 100 years time!

A classic adventure horror
By Storms EniGma
Trevor Bentley appears at first to be a normal 15 year old boy, but there is a heroic side to him that becomes evident through out this book.
one rainy night he accidentally stumbles upon the infamous Jack the Ripper, and deciding that this may be the only chance any one gets to put a stop to his murderous rampage, he sets out to stop him, Unfortunately young Trev finds him self way out of his depth as he gets himself and a family held hostage by the Ripper on a boat set sail for The new world, America, Trevor manages to escape from the grasp of this legendary murderer, but not before they both find them selves in America.
This story is truly a great adventure, Starting in late 19th century London, to the new word America and then climaxes in the wild west, 3 very unique cultures that all existed at that time, add to this a story of love, friendship and self discovery and of coarse gruesome death in the way only Laymon can tell, and you have what is one of the greatest stories told

A quality anthology of non-Western religious texts
By Michael Schelb
Mircea Eliade, the former professor from the University of Chicago, who was well known for his research on Shamanism, selected some of the basic sources from various traditions to present a solid introduction into the world's sacred writings. The book is not meant to be exhaustive, nor does it include any commentary by the great scholar - rather it is a resource of texts to enable research, study or simply the casual reading of these non-Western traditions. Eliade initially compiled this work to be used in his classes. A good source for students of philosophy and anthropology.

Great read
By Free_At_Last
Not exhaustive by any means, but if you are looking to read sacred texts from many different religions, then this is a fabulous overview. A little from here, a little from there...it can help to give a person a general idea of what was taught and help a reader to know what they may be interested in looking into further. This book is sizable too, you get your money's worth without a doubt.

If you're trying to pass the NREMT then BUY THIS BOOK!!!
By Karley H. Wetterling
I graduated EMT school and had to wait a month before taking the NREMT. Once I finally got to take it, I was only 82 questions in before it cut me off. Which means I either did really good or really bad. And as it turns out, I did really bad. Then I knew I had to study. I read some of the reviews for other EMT study guide on Amazon, but what sold me on this book was that some people had used it and passed at around 70 questions.

So I ordered it. Then used it to study for two weeks straight before taking the exam. The second time I took it the computer shut me off at 70 questions. Less than the time it shut me off before. I was nervous. My results came in a few days ago. I PASSED!!!!

This book is really amazing. It covers all thew major topics without bombarding you with needless information that the EMT textbooks have in it. The questions were almost exactly the same as the ones on the actual National Registry Exam. BUY THIS BOOK!!!

The Best Study Guide I've Found Out of 4.
By cute shoe girl
I graduated this past August 1st, and took my NREMT exam Aug.20.
This is the best study guide so far out of 4. I found 3 at the library and had to order this one to get my hands on it. It has the most practice questions, a ton of them, which is really great practice. It was also the most expensive, but it's laid out the best, with exams arranged by topic rather than randomly, and the explanations are the most complete and comprehensive and are right at the end of each exam session, so you aren't flipping all the way to the back of the book for every answer, which I liked. It doesn't waste space on reviewing material you already learned in class and have in your textbook. There were really only a couple of mistakes I found. One was using the word "book" for "body" in BSI three times, but you can figure that one out. And there were minor typos, but one major one where the answer was "positive ventilation is warranted" when it should have a "not" before the "warranted". You'd have to know this as I did to figure out the explanation is just plain wrong.

This book is great in that what you need is lots of practice doing multiple choice questions, and not a big review; you already took a class for that. Other study guides are a lot of review and not much test practice (McGraw-Hill and Kaplan). And one (Mcgraw-Hill) didn't even have answer explanations! Learning Express was the next best study guide with 3 practice exams of 150 questions each with good explanations and a fourth fill-in the blank practice exam of 160 questions.

The NREMT exam is adaptive, so depending on how well you are doing, it will throw different topics at you or stay on one topic you aren't answering so well. The NREMT website says the CBT exam is from 70-120 questions, with a 70 question minimum. You are timed at 2 hours and 15 minutes. My test stopped me at exactly 70 questions and I passed but thought I had not, becasue it was so difficult. It threw some ridiculously hard questions at me near the end on topics we never studied in class, like Sickle Cell disease, fistulas, and gastroenteritis. A classmate got a peristalsis question. I think the CBT knew I was going to pass, so before it ends, it threw in topics that are beyond the scope of our textbook to see what we know, or just to mess with us.

I have to disagree with one reviewer who says the CBT exam had a lot of questions in it exactly like this study book. I only got one or two that resembled the ones in this study guide, but most of the questions on the CBT exam waere a lot more difficult than any of these study guide book questions, but this is still the best one for practicing multiple choice tests. Good luck!

Good experience
By David
I think first and foremost the most relevant part of this review is that I used this study book and I passed my NREMT last week. I believe this is a good COMPANION to your material. Brady and the main guy here, J. Mistovich, write the prehospital textbook and the two work very well together. You need to have a solid understanding and study aid heading in to this book.

I found the most helpful part is that this book allows you to gauge your understanding but takes great care to help you think critically about your answers and give you good guidance when you miss things.

The part that doesn't directly help is that in this book, there is always a good answer, and all of the answers are pretty fair. In the NREMT, as has been said probably many times, you will be presented with lots of what looks like unfair answers where more than one thing could be right or everything looks wrong. The NREMT is looking for the best answer, often in an adverse environment. This book, as well as a bulk of others want to focus on training you to pick the correct answer in the best environment. In the CD that comes with the book, the practice exams give you a hint of what that would be like.

In the end, I used an additional website to leverage the pretest experience, and had I not grown to understand that the best choice and the correct choice can be somewhat different but equally critical, I would have had issues. Learn this, and you'll do fine.

Collected Fictions, by Jorge Luis Borges

Jorge Luis Borges has been called the greatest Spanish-language writer of our century. Now for the first time in English, all of Borges' dazzling fictions are gathered into a single volume, brilliantly translated by Andrew Hurley. From his 1935 debut with The Universal History of Iniquity, through his immensely influential collections Ficciones and The Aleph, these enigmatic, elaborate, imaginative inventions display Borges' talent for turning fiction on its head by playing with form and genre and toying with language. Together these incomparable works comprise the perfect one-volume compendium for all those who have long loved Borges, and a superb introduction to the master's work for those who have yet to discover this singular genius.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Amazon.com Review
Although Jorge Luis Borges published his first book in 1923--doling out his own money for a limited edition of Fervor de Buenos Aires--he remained in Argentinian obscurity for almost three decades. In 1951, however, Ficciones appeared in French, followed soon after by an English translation. This collection, which included the cream of the author's short fictions, made it clear that Borges was a world-class (if highly unclassifiable) artist--a brilliant, lyrical miniaturist, who could pose the great questions of existence on the head of pin. And by 1961, when he shared the French Prix Formentor with Samuel Beckett, he seemed suddenly to tower over a half-dozen literary cultures, the very exemplar of modernism with a human face.

By the time of his death in 1986, Borges had been granted old master status by almost everybody (except, alas, the gentlemen of the Swedish Academy). Yet his work remained dispersed among a half-dozen different collections, some of them increasingly hard to find. Andrew Hurley has done readers a great service, then, by collecting all the stories in a single, meticulously translated volume. It's a pleasure to be reminded that Borges's style--poetic, dreamlike, and compounded of innumerable small surprises--was already in place by 1935, when he published A Universal History of Iniquity: "The earth we inhabit is an error, an incompetent parody. Mirrors and paternity are abominable because they multiply and affirm it." (Incidentally, the thrifty author later recycled the second of these aphorisms in his classic bit of bookish metaphysics, "Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Teris.") The glories of his middle period, of course, have hardly aged a day. "The Garden of the Forking Paths" remains the best deconstruction of the detective story ever written, even in the post-Auster era, and "Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote" puts the so-called death of the author in pointed, hilarious perspective.

But Hurley's omnibus also brings home exactly how consistent Borges remained in his concerns. As late as 1975, in "Avelino Arredondo," he was still asking (and occasionally even answering) the same riddles about time and its human repository, memory: "For the man in prison, or the blind man, time flows downstream as though down a slight decline. As he reached the midpoint of his reclusion, Arredondo more than once achieved that virtually timeless time. In the first patio there was a wellhead, and at the bottom, a cistern where a toad lived; it never occurred to Arredondo that it was the toad's time, bordering on eternity, that he sought." Throughout, Hurley's translation is crisp and assured (although this reader will always have a soft spot for "Funes, the Memorious" rather than "Funes, His Memory.") And thanks to his efforts, Borgesians will find no better--and no more pleasurable--rebuttal of the author's description of himself as "a shy sort of man who could not bring himself to write short stories." --James Marcus

From Publishers Weekly
Undeniably one of the most influential writers to emerge in this century from Latin America or anywhere else, Borges (1899-1986) is best known for his short stories, all of which appear here for the first time in one volume, translated and annotated by University of Puerto Rico professor Hurley. Many of the stories return to the same set of images and themes that mark Borges's best known work: the code of ethics embraced by gauchos, knifefighters and outlaws; labyrinths; confrontations with one's doppelganger; and discoveries of artifacts from other worlds (an encyclopedia of a mysterious region in Iraq; a strange disc that has only one side and that gives a king his power; a menacing book that infinitely multiplies its own pages; fragmentary manuscripts that narrate otherworldly accounts of lands of the immortals). Less familiar are episodes that narrate the violent, sordid careers of pirates and outlaws like Billy the Kid (particularly in the early collection A Universal History of Iniquity) or attempts to dramatize the consciousness of Shakespeare or Homer. Elusive, erudite, melancholic, Borges's fiction will intrigue the general reader as well as the scholar. This is the first in a series of three new translations (including the Collected Poems and Collected Nonfictions, all timed to coincide with the centennial of the author's birth), which will offer an alternative to the extensive but very controversial collaborations between Borges and Norman Thomas di Giovanni. First serial rights to the New Yorker, the New York Review of Books and Grand Street.

From Library Journal
Borges, one of the giants of 20th-century world literature and a pioneer of Spanish American letters, is the master of the short tale he called ficcion. Not quite short stories, Borgesian narrations are metaphysical speculation, the elaborate working out of a hypothetical premise or philosophical concept. Published partly in commemoration of the centennial of his birth, this collection marks the first time that all his narratives, stretching over 50 years, have been compiled in one volume in English. Except for Shakespeare's Memory, which appears here in translation for the first time, the other seven books have appeared separately. The Reign of Labyrinths (1964), the staple anthology for years, will now more than likely be usurped by this more modern translation, which has useful notes about Argentine history and culture. What a thrill to find old favorites?"The Circular Ruins," "Pierre Menard," "The Library of Babel"?updated and boxed with lesser-known gems. An exciting publication event and an indispensable acquisition for all libraries; collected poetry and nonfiction are slated to follow next year.?Lawrence Olszewski, OCLC Lib., Dublin, OH

I now describe my pet turtle as monstrous
By Jonathan Tu
I have always been hesitant to read fiction originally written in any language except English. I'm fickle enough as it is without needing another person's biases and tendencies interfering with my own... and so it was with great trepidation that I bought Hurley's collection.

The stories in summation: marvelous. Hurley's work? I'll never be able to read these Borges stories again without Hurley's translation heavily influencing, and that is an endorsement. I suspect that for most people their first experience of Borges will always be their most memorable, and their preferred. I don't think there are many "On first reading Chapman's Homer" instances: that initial shock of strange and monstrous (perhaps my favorite Borgesian adjective) is evident through any kind of translation so long as it is basically competent. Whatever arguments others may have with Hurley's, they can at least admit that his is that.

But I feel there's more: a playful lilt to the language, one that isn't overly scholarly or mechanical. Hurley's introduction briefly talks about the particular style Borges would become famous for: a laconic, matter-of-fact myth disguised as mere sentences, with the employment of words normally alien to each other. Hurley serves this style well, and his presentation of the most memorable lines of each story were the ones that stayed with me even after readings of several different versions. I'm not exaggerating when I say that I sat down with four different versions of "The Library of Babel" and compared them sentence by sentence. I was living in a bookstore at the time, stuck on an island in the middle of the Aegean and co-habitating with an Englishman who held Irby's version as the superior. I listened politely, and compared, and found that even after ouzo and attempts at persuasion it was my original experience that resonated. Reading Irby's left in me a strange longing for Hurley's words. I remember this line in particular:

"They were urged on by the delirium of trying to reach the books in the Crimson Hexagon: books whose format is smaller than usual, all-powerful, illustrated and magical." (Irby)

"They were spurred on by the holy zeal to reach - someday, through unrelenting effort - the books of the Crimson Hexagon - books smaller than natural books, books omnipotent, illustrated, and magical." (Hurley)

It was that "someday, through unrelenting effort" which stuck with me, and its absence in Irby doomed the entire enterprise. Is this a lack of Irby's, or my own bias towards the translation I first read? I'm not sure, but in almost every way I preferred Hurley.

There seems to be a distinct wave of anti-Hurley sentiment, and it's of the "I read a review that said it, but I'll assume that opinion as my own" variety. I eventually found that the Irby-devoted Englishman hadn't even bothered to read the Hurley version. Don't make his mistake of dismissal-by-proxy: try it for yourself.

A trove of mythological stories defying space and time.
By Dr. Kasumu O. Salawu
Some earlier reviewers complained about the quality of the translation of this collection of stories by Andrew Hurley, especially when compared to the collaboration between Jorge Luis Borges, (JLB, as he liked to sign), and Norman Thomas di Giovanni in preparing Labyrinths. (I suggest you read all reviews in the order they were written.) As one reasonably familiar with JLB's oeuvre, (a word JLB disliked), I state unequivocally that paying six dollars more for four times the number of stories in Labyrinths is a great bargain. Beyond nickels and dimes, it is precisely because the works of JLB were erstwhile translated into English in bits and pieces that his recognition as a gifted writer took so long in coming. (Jean-Pierre Berne's two-volume French translation, Oeuvres completes, is highly recommended.)
American-born writer, editor, translator and collaborator, di Giovanni, was JLB's personal assistant in Buenos Aires from 1968 to 1972. I shall now illustrate specifically how his style of translation differed from that of Hurley with the story "The Gospel According to Saint Mark." In characterizing the Gutre family when they first met Espinosa, di Giovanni wrote "They were barely articulate," (in English, that is), while Hurley scribed "They rarely spoke." While the former sentence explains why "the Gutres, who knew so much about things in the country, did not know how to explain them," (page 398 in this book), the latter indicated an aloofness if not suspicion of Espinosa from their first meeting which addresses the irony of the ending. In depicting their eagerness to have St. Mark read to them after dinner, Hurley wrote "In the following days, the Gutres would wolf down the spitted beef and canned sardines in order to arrive sooner at the Gospel" while di Giovanni essayed "The Gutres took to bolting their barbecued meat and their sardines so as not to delay the Gospel." Where di Giovanni deciphered JLB's allusions to Herbert Spencer, W. H. Hudson and Charles I, Hurley explicated the origin of Baltasar Espinosa, the whereabouts of Ramos Mejia and the theme of the novel, Don Segundo Sombra. Take your pick.
Finally, JLB habitually changed texts from edition to edition, especially in his poetry. It is then problematic to determine the faithfulness of the translations. Rest assured that, though rhyme and rhythm are compromised in any translation, in Hurley's rendering, the brilliance and magic of each story is preserved down to, say, the symbolism of the goldfinch at the conclusion of the illustrative yarn, "The Gospel According to Saint Mark."

Bad translation
By lux
The critical applause the marketing department of this book's publisher dreamed up is one recent example of how money corrupts art. Penguin, often a reliable imprint, needs to be told that THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR PUBLISHING INFERIOR MATERIAL. This was the first Borges I read, and I loved it, until I encountered alternative translations in an anthology called 'Borges: A Reader'. I noticed that the most elegant and intense translations were by someone called Norman Thomas di Giovanni. I asked a number of my Spanish-speaking friends to compare the stories to the originals, and they unanimously agreed that the di Giovannis were more accurate as well. Later I heard that di Giovanni published a number of Borges' works in several books that are now out of print. I wondered why a superior translation would be superseded by a new, clunky one, and why this new clunky one would be hailed as the "definitive English version". I found out that it's because di Giovanni made his translations in collaboration with Borges himself, that they spent years getting it right, and that Borges wept with joy over the translations which he deemed in some cases better than the original. So they agreed to split the profits 50/50, an unprecedented thing for translator to make that percentage. When Borges died his Estate decided they'd make more cash if they got a new translation... and they hold the copyrights. Thus the true definitive versions are condemned to dust.

The best that can be said about Hurley's translation is that they're "capable" (see Harold Bloom's obviously paid-for quote on the back); well, you'd have to REALLY screw up to make Borges not amazing. In other words, read whatever you can because Borges is the absolute greatest: the most intellectual fantacist, the most romantic scifi artist, the most classical modernist and modern classicist... and let's not forget the inventor of postmodernism.

I should say that after reading all of Hurley's Borges and most of di Giovanni's (as well as versions by various other people here and there) there's nothing really *wrong* with Hurley; often he succeeds in being more "cool" (in a curt, bad*ss kind of way) than di Giovanni, though at the cost of Borges' Victorian intellectual tone (present in all the writings, lectures, and interviews he did in English, as well as the Di Giovanni versions); and instead of re-translating into English from Spanish the bits here and there that Borges translated from English (most often and lengthily occurring in 'A Universal History of Infamy') Hurley just prints the text of the original verbatim, which breaks down some of Borges' carefully crafted illusions but offers much more insight. Also, he is on occasion a little more literal than the Di Giovanni/Borges translations, and therefore perhaps more 'authentic' in some sense... but is it possible to be more true to Borges than Borges was? Changes from the original stories in the Di Giovanni versions must be viewed as the author's revised intentions rather than as inaccurate translation, because of how closely Borges worked with him.

Bottom line: In a perfect world, both (and even more) versions would be readily available. But in the present circumstances, where due to greedy money battles we must have one and only one, and all others must be locked in the vault and kept from the eyes of the people forever, why would we want the results of some guy's day job instead of the one Borges himself worked on?

WHY WOULD THEY KEEP THAT FROM US?

Don't support this blacklisting; seek out the di Giovanni versions and demand Penguin stop publishing inferior material.

In a final note, I would recommend 'Borges: A Reader' edited by Emir Rodriguez Monegal and Alastair Reid over any other Borges book in print as both the best place to start and an essential volume. It contains poems, lectures and essays, movie reviews, satires, and of course a great many of the stories printed here, from a variety of translators (including a few Hurleys and a whole lot of Di Giovannis). There is material here you can't find anywhere else, and as two Spanish speakers and Borges experts you can trust them to pick "the best translations" as they say. It is out of print but not hard to come by. Explore!
